Initiatives and Collaborations

be 1 in a million

On January 25, 2011, First Lady Michelle Obama issued a national call for an increase in volunteer efforts - more specifically, she called for people, just like you, to become a mentor. The United Way Worldwide responded by pledging to recruit 1 million mentors by 2014.

The United Way of Allegheny County stepped up to the challenge and is planning to recruit 4,000 mentors through partnerships with local government, corporations, schools, and agencies - including Amachi Pittsburgh. The campaign, Be 1 in a Million, is an initiative designed to improve the educational success of our region's students.
