Amachi Pittsburgh believes that all children have great inherent value and it is our mutual hope and expectation that through mentoring, the God-given potential, purpose and value of children of promise will be recognized, protected and nurtured through the caring support and guidance of carefully screened and trained mentors from local congregations and community organizations.
It is our hope that the positive impact of mentoring relationships will better prepare these children to overcome the challenges associated with parental incarceration.
Amachi Pittsburgh has several programs for mentees.
Amachi T.E.A.M.S.
Amachi T.E.A.M.S. (Teaching Entrepreneurship As a Means to Success) is a rewarding program that instructs Amachi youth about the value of owning or managing a business and being financially responsible.
T.E.A.M.S. helps youths realize that they can achieve financial independence by learning the principles and value of business. Participants will gain financial literacy, achieve personal satisfaction and build the foundation for a successful future while learning directly from entrepreneurs in our community.
Program Description
T.E.A.M.S. is a youth entrepreneurship program that teaches youth in grades 10 through 12 a variety of topics in an easy-to-understand way. The 6-week interactive program includes a combination of presentations and classroom interaction in which participants take a hands-on role in creating a mock business. A variety of community business leaders will be in charge of each class session, but instead of simply lecturing, leaders will have an interactive session with the participants to help them with each step of starting and managing their business. Discussions will be dependent on what the class determines to be the best business solution.
Class topics will include:
- Idea Generation: Students will brainstorm the perfect business idea for the program, taking into account factors such as supply and demand, and current market trends.
- Business Planning: Once a decision is reached for the type of business, participants will learn how to write a formal business plan.
- Financial Responsibility: Students will learn how to forecast potential costs of doing business, loans and balancing budgets, and final income.
- Sales and Marketing: Students will learn how to market and sell the product.
The majority of materials and activities in the course are provided by the National Foundation of Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE).
The program will run initially for 6 weeks from June 24 through August 6, 2009.
